2015 Hits & Misses at Sew Not Perfect

How can it already be the final day of 2015?  I'll be enjoying the day with my family and my husband's family, and probably going to bed early.  But I took time to think over the best and worst (in my own view) of 2015.  Soon I'll be sharing some of what I hope to focus on in 2016.
My favorite hit from the year - personally - was jumping in with Periscope broadcasts and especially the #honestcraftroomies scope hop.  It's been a lot of fun to broadcast, and I have ideas to scope more regularly and hopefully helpfully in 2016.  I've also loved making so many new social media friends through Periscope.  ((You can follow me on Periscope at this link))

This year I had some great opportunities.  I produced my best tutorial (Bow Headband Tutorial with knit fabric) in July and it is by far the most popular post on my blog.  Sew Can She and Fabricworm both featured it and I had the opportunity to sew several headbands in the Homestead line by Emily Isabella for Birch Fabrics.

I don't know how I was so fortunate to be selected as a Jennuine Design Pattern Brand representative, but I was, and I absolutely love every pattern she has designed and put out.  I can't wait to see what else Jenn designs and puts out.  The Jennuine Design Moto Jacket is my favorite thing I made for my boys this year - maybe my favorite of all.

I also loved this Fawn Lily Tunic & Dress pattern that I sewed for my daughter using Carolyn Hulse's Happy Home line.  The pattern is by Rock the Stitch for Willow & Co and can be found on both Upcraft Club and Craftsy.  I entered it at the State Fair and received second place.  I haven't blogged about it yet, but I love the construction.  I added a lining underneath since the fabric was so light.  Next time, I'd take the time to handstitch the lining closed instead of top stitching around the sleeves.  I think if I'd done that, I may have earned that blue ribbon, too.  So, I guess this was mostly a "hit" but a bit of a miss.

I also sewed several hand bags that I am really pleased with.  The Jenna Tote by SOTAK Handmade and working with leather or the first time were probably my favorites.  You can see more of my bags on my Instagram account.

I also loved sewing for myself more this year.  I still pull out my M is for Moto Jogger Pants whenever they are clean, and look forward to making a capri version soon.

As far as Misses - besides the one I mentioned above about not hand sewing the Fawn Lily Tunic sleeves - the biggest would be the Sew Your Pattern Stash venture.  I started out great and was lots of fun.  The link up participation was fair, but not great.  There were several of you who were active in the Facebook group and link party.  I loved doing the interviews to go along with each topic.  But that only last two months.  Then my laptop was destroyed, I got derailed, and it never really recovered.  A few of my interviews didn't get returned.  Not to mention that I realized I didn't like a lot of the patterns I owned and that my pattern buying and sewing preferences has really evolved since I started sewing and bought many of my pdf patterns.  I'm not sure if it can be revived for 2016 - but I'd be willing to have feedback if people are interested in giving it another go.

My other big miss is time management in general.  That doesn't show on my blog so obviously, but it shows up more in what doesn't get to my blog (things I sew but don't get around to posting about) and probably my house (in that things fall apart because I binge sew and don't clean until I get it done).  I'd really like to work on that this year.  Regular sewing, regular blogging and regular cleaning!

Alice in Wonderland Sunsuit for Kids Clothes Week

While the proper name for this style garment is under debate, there is no debate that this is a cute one!   Depending on your age and geographic location, this garment might be called a sunsuit, playsuit, romper, or other.

It's my first finished project for Kid's Clothes Week summer season.  This is the first season I've been able to sew along every day.  With five kids at home all year - I was so excited to find out three would be gone all week in the morning to VBS.  I've spent the mornings sewing with only two kids at home.  The theme is traveling so with this project we are traveling with Alice to Wonderland.

Summer Stash-a-thon for Sew Your (Pattern) Stash

Are you ready to really get sewing through your stash?  I am introducing fun motivators to work through your patterns double-time this summer (for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere).  I hope you will sew along!

The Summer Stash-a-thon will run from June 1 through (US) Labor Day in conjunction with the Sew Your (Pattern) Stash Facebook group.  Sew as many of your stash patterns as you can during this time - even (especially) more than once per pattern.  Then link up and/or edit the file in the Pattern Stash Group for each item.  After Labor Day, I will announce the sewing-est sewists and feature a random winner or two from the link up.  I'm not very bold when it comes to asking for prizes/giveaways, so I'll probably gather a few goodies from my own stash (of non-patterns) to send out to winners.  We will see what happens.

April & May Sew Your (Pattern) Stash

Due to technical difficulties and general life this blog has been too quiet the last two months.  Let me say, it is a good idea to keep your drinks away from your computer, laptop, computerized sewing machine and similar devices.  Shortly after getting my laptop back from a hard drive replacement, 32 ounces of soda (pop) was spilled (accidentally) directly on top of the laptop keyboard.  I never heard from it again!  The process of replacing the laptop, re-activating windows, re-entering all my passwords, etc combined with the general pace of life as a homeschooler and mother and wife has kept me from most of my sewing and all of my blogging.  Which is a bummer because I enjoy both and was really looking forward to the April and May themes.
The link up here is for your projects from April and May if you'd like to link up - and it will be open until June 5 since it's so late.   Be sure to keep an eye out for a fun adjustment to the summer schedule for Sew Your (Pattern) Stash!  Also, I'll be posting my article from the recent One Thimble Magazine, and a special project on Monday as part of the Mystery Challenge Tour.

Have a great weekend - for those of us in the US, it is one of the best weekends of the year, and a necessary opportunity to stop and remember all who have given their lives for the liberty we have enjoy!

March Link Party - Sew Your (Pattern) Stash

March is here already and with it comes a new theme and new link party for Sew Your (Pattern) Stash 2015!
You can read more about Sew Your (Pattern) Stash here and join the Facebook group here if you haven't already.  I hope you link up!  I've set up this link party to accept photos with or without a url to give opportunity to those of you who do not blog or have a url for your project.   The February link party was great and I loved seeing everyone's accessories and pajamas.  Personally, I still didn't hit my goal of sewing Stella from Swoon Patterns (affiliate link) and a few other small accessories like burp cloths and lip balm holders.  However, I did sew a knit bow headband for my youngest daughter and I cut four Ethel totes from Swoon (instead of the Stella).  I just haven't sewn them all yet.  I am really excited about this month, though, and planning to finish my Ethels as well as sew Easter dress(es?) for at least my oldest daughter and I'd like to make Betty Ann from Sis Boom Patterns.  I actually have quite a few dresses I'd like to make but I'm trying not to over shoot it!  The Link Party is at the bottom, but first:

Congratulations to our February winners!  Ren M., Janai A., and Nydia C. each won one of the Swoon Patterns that Alicia generously provided.  Ren M. from The Inspired Wren was the random winner for the February Link Party and she created this cozy newborn layette using the Lullaby Layette pattern from Oliver + S.  Please visit her blog for all the details!

February Link Party - Sew Your (Pattern) Stash

It's time to open our February monthly link up for Sew Your (Pattern) Stash 2015 (you can read more about Sew Your (Pattern) Stash here and join the Facebook group here if you haven't already).  I hope you get a chance to link up!  I've set up this link party to accept photos without a url to give opportunity to those of you who do not blog or have a url for your project.   The January link party was lots of fun with several creative projects.  I am disappointed that, although I sewed a ton during January, I never completed my goal of sewing something for myself.  This month, I am aiming to sew a Stella from Swoon Patterns (affiliate link) and a few other small accessories like burp cloths and lip balm holders.  Maybe (but I'm not counting on it) I'll get to make some pajama pants for the kids.  The weeks always seem to fly by and February is even shorter than most months.

Congratulations go to Denita from Hattilu Handmade as the random winner of last month's link party (winning link).  Please visit her blog to see all she accomplished.  I love what she made for herself and especially the touch of decorative stitching at the pockets and hemline on her Jocole Wideleg Pants.  She won a $15 gift certificate to the Imagine Gnats shop (affiliate link). The prize was self-sponsored - I love Rachel's blog and shop and wanted to introduce more people to it.  If you haven't seen her selection of fabrics and patterns - I highly recommend you stop by.  In addition to carrying great fabric, she runs some incredible sales and offers even more fun on her blog.

And A Prize! (Three Prizes!)
This month Alicia from Swoon Patterns is giving away three of her favorite patterns.  Three winners: the first can choose one from Glenda, Betty and Vivian.  The second winner gets her choice between the two reamianing patterns and the third received the remaining pattern.

Resolutions, Sewing Project Planning for 2015 & Free Planner Printable

Have you made your sewing resolutions for 2015? I'm not usually a big resolution maker, but with 2015 just days away, I have been giving some thought to a couple sewing goals for the new year. I've been sewing more seriously now for just over a year, and blogging for 11 months. I've learned a lot and hope to have more direction and purpose to what I sew going forward. Here are three four goals for 2015 that I came up with:

1.  Sew the patterns and fabric I already own at the end of 2014 more than what I purchase new in 2015.
2.  Learn how to improve my sewing blog (design and pictures)
3.  Develop the skill of hand embroidery
4.  Oh, and the fourth is earn a first place at the State Fair sewing competition!

The first goal is the one I'm devoting the most intention toward right now.  I am hosting a Sew Your (Pattern) Stash group for myself and others who want to sew through the patterns we already own.  I think its going to be a lot of fun and a source of encouragement and accountability to keep to that goal.  I've also worked diligently to organize my pdf patterns.  During the process, I found that I had many patterns which were not stored in a secure location (for me right now, that is Dropbox), and several that I had never even downloaded in the first place (i.e. I forgot I bought them!).  I created this spreadsheet to keep track of what I own, what I have sewn, etc.  I also designed this sewing project planning sheet to help me plan ahead for each project.  I can fill out the sheet, collect fabric and notions, and store them all together in a ziplock bag until I am ready to start the project.  This potentially will save time when I have the chance to sit down and sew, and will help me think through and plan for each of the monthly themes in our Sew Your Pattern Stash Group.  I originally saw the idea here (I visited her blog over two years ago and used her free tutorial for a ruffled crib skirt - which is awesome).  I wanted some different features on my own sheet, so I created my own.  You are welcome to print it for your own use as well.  One version is for pdf patterns and includes a reminder to print, cut, etc.  The other is for patterns or projects in general and looks the same, but does not include the reminders to print, etc.  Also, each version is a two-page pdf.  The first page is full-size, the second is half-page size (two per page).  I'd love to hear if they are useful to you! (Click the text under each picture to view the file and print)

So, how do you organize, plan, and keep track of your patterns and sewing goals?  What are your sewing goals for the new year?  I'd love to hear about them in the comments!

Sew Your (Pattern) Stash 2015

I'm hosting a sewing challenge for 2015!  The goal is to sew during 2015 the patterns you already own but haven't yet sewn at the end of 2014.  It's that simple.  You make your own rules about whether that means you can/cannot buy more patterns, or whether or not you are only going to use fabric from your stash.  The goal of the challenge and Facebook group is to encourage one another, share ideas, and sew along together as we sew through some of the great patterns in our stash.   You are invited to choose a stash pattern to sew that fits within the broad monthly theme, but if you'd rather sew outside the theme, that's fine.  Then, share photos of your finished projects in each month's album in the Facebook group and I'll also host a monthly link up here on the blog for those who are sewing along.

My personal goal is to sew at least one pattern from my stash each month.  I think (hope) some months I'll accomplish more stash sewing, but that leaves room for other projects and for the pattern testing I hope to continue.

So how about you?  Are you going to join us and Sew Your (Pattern) Stash in 2015?
