Ethel Tote Bag from Swoon Sewing Patterns

Do you Swoon?  (As in, do you love sewing the handbag patterns designed by Alicia of Swoon Sewing Patterns?)  I do!  Ethel is free tote bag pattern from Swoon and a great way to try out a pattern from Swoon, if you haven't already. (Swoon has several free patterns here)
*this post contains my affiliate links for Swoon.  I received this pattern for free - because everyone can!  If you use my links and make a purchase, I will receive a portion of the sale.  If making money were a motive for this post, I would not be reviewing a free pattern (ha!).  UPDATE Sept 2015 - Alicia at Swoon has updated the Ethel pattern since I sewed this version.  The newer version features a higher pocket, new diagrams, and different interfacing (with the introduction of Pellon's new Flex Foam)  You can see her post about the new Ethel here.

Sewing Ethel is not difficult.  I would not say handbags are my forte, but I've made a few other Swoon bags (but just realized I never blogged about any of them!  You can spot a picture of one of my Glendas in the collage in this post).  I think Alicia does a great job making the illustrations and instructions clear to follow.  The only modifications I made for this bag were to lengthen the shoulder straps a few inches and sew the lining with a larger seam allowance.  The lining and main fabric are cut from the same pattern pieces, so I find that it helps to keep the lining from bunching up inside if I use a larger seam allowance when sewing those pieces.  I forgot to do this for the bottom, and I got a ripple which I am not proud of (and a blurry picture of it, too).

The Ethel tote from Swoon is designed with a front slot pocket, an interior zip pocket, and an interior slot pocket; but, you can easily add, modify or remove pockets to suit your own vision for the bag.  I sewed a divison in the interior pocket, to hold smaller items in place better, such as a cell phone or pens.

This particular Ethel tote was a thank you gift.  The recipient's daughter helped me pick out fabric she thought her mom would like and after I sewed the bag, I stuffed it with snacks and little gifts.  I was really impressed with how much the bag held.

The free Ethel Tote bag pattern is designed to be made from quilting cotton, but I used home decorator fabric and still used the interfacing and fusible fleece that the pattern calls for.  The finished bag is very sturdy.  When I cut this bag, I cut three others, which are now in my UFO pile.  I'm eager to finish those as well as a few other Swoon Sewing Pattern handbags I have on my to-do list.  Any guesses how long it will take me?  I cut them in February.  Interfaced them in May, I think.  Am I the only one who does that?!

Interview: Alicia (Wietholter) Miller of Swoon Patterns

Today I'm excited to share an interview with Alicia of Swoon Patterns.  This month's theme for Sew Your (Pattern) Stash has been Accessories and Pajamas, and Alicia's patterns are my favorite for bags and similar accessories.  They are incredibly well drafted and written.  The Swoon Patterns Facebook group is one of the best and offers lots of encouragement and ideas (and no negativity) and Alicia's business practices are admirable.  In the two years since she began Swoon Patterns, she designed an amazing number of patterns and seen outstanding growth and success.  Read on for more insight into Alicia and Swoon Patterns. And don't miss the giveaway at the bottom of the post!  (*note - I do not use my affiliate links in interview posts.  If you would like to support my blog and use my affiliate links, please see the affiliate tab at the top.)

Gift Ideas for a Sewing (or Quilting) Enthusiast

Valentine's Day is just around the corner - and nearly a full year of birthdays and holidays is still before us, so I put together a list of gift ideas for a sewing enthusiast.  My husband is pretty easy.  Books or beard oil are standard gifts these days.  (If you are looking for beard gifts, I bought from Hobo Beard Oil at Christmas and my husband loved it)  But sewing gifts are different, especially for significant others who don't sew.  The sewing world is a foreign realm to them and it is hard to know what to buy for someone who loves sewing - so here are a few hints.  Casually leave this post open on a shared device or flagrantly email the link if you want to drop some hints!

(the only affiliate link in the post is to the Swoon items)

I couldn't link to every individual product or shop, so some of these links lead to multiple ideas in a shop.  **And I just saw on Instagram that Sew Caroline is offering a sale this weekend - 20% off anything is the shop with code HAPPYHAPPY  through 2/8

My personal favorite would have to be anything from your local sewing or fabric store (shop local!), the Swoon Patterns subscription, and the Tula Pink device case.  The Swoon subscription is high on my own list.  I'd love to own all her patterns and the subscription currently includes all patterns that she has released to date, plus any other patterns that she releases until April 2015 (after that, a new subscription will be offered for new patterns).  With the subscription, it works out to be about $2.50 per pattern, which is an amazing deal!  And while I haven't yet sewn with any Tula Pink fabric, it would be so fun to have a phone case!  But I love all the sewing swag, so it's hard to pick.  The gift certificate for fabric and to Wawak solves the problem of choosing something when you aren't sure what the receiver already owns and you want to be practical.

What are your favorites, or what did I forget?  Leave a comment to let me know!

Swoon Coraline Clutch from Green Corduroy Pants {Upcycle}

The Coraline Clutch from Swoon Patterns (*affiliate link) has been on my "Want to Sew" list for quite a while.  I finally sewed one and love it!  Hopefully someone likes her as much as I do, since this bag is headed to a local silent auction as a donation.  The outer fabric is corduroy, upcycled from a pair of pants that a friend gave to me thinking I could use them for a sewing project (thoughtful friend!).  I love the color and the way the corduroy gives shape and stability to the clutch.  I used a metallic gold zipper that I bought at JoAnn fabric, which is also where I purchased the lining fabric.

March Link Party - Sew Your (Pattern) Stash

March is here already and with it comes a new theme and new link party for Sew Your (Pattern) Stash 2015!
You can read more about Sew Your (Pattern) Stash here and join the Facebook group here if you haven't already.  I hope you link up!  I've set up this link party to accept photos with or without a url to give opportunity to those of you who do not blog or have a url for your project.   The February link party was great and I loved seeing everyone's accessories and pajamas.  Personally, I still didn't hit my goal of sewing Stella from Swoon Patterns (affiliate link) and a few other small accessories like burp cloths and lip balm holders.  However, I did sew a knit bow headband for my youngest daughter and I cut four Ethel totes from Swoon (instead of the Stella).  I just haven't sewn them all yet.  I am really excited about this month, though, and planning to finish my Ethels as well as sew Easter dress(es?) for at least my oldest daughter and I'd like to make Betty Ann from Sis Boom Patterns.  I actually have quite a few dresses I'd like to make but I'm trying not to over shoot it!  The Link Party is at the bottom, but first:

Congratulations to our February winners!  Ren M., Janai A., and Nydia C. each won one of the Swoon Patterns that Alicia generously provided.  Ren M. from The Inspired Wren was the random winner for the February Link Party and she created this cozy newborn layette using the Lullaby Layette pattern from Oliver + S.  Please visit her blog for all the details!

Link-Up Guidelines:
You may link to any sewing project you complete during the month of March that meets our three requirements:
  1. From Your Pattern Stash  -  sewn using a pdf (or paper) pattern you already owned by the end of 2014.
  2. Fits the Monthly Theme - this month's theme is Dresses & Skirts, so you may link to any sewing project that is along these lines (for girls or women - either is fine).
  3. Includes the Sew Your (Pattern) Stash button - either in your blog post or on your blog sidebar.  (grab the HTML code for the button below)
Link to as many projects you sew during the month that fit the guidelines.  You are welcome to enter more than one project during the month.  If you do not blog, you may link a photo of your project (I set up this link party so that you can upload a photo with or without a URL), or you may share your photo in our March Show-Off Album in the Facebook group.

Can't wait to see what everyone makes this month!

1Pattern:3Ways Tour - Swoon Coraline with Hattilu Handmade

It's the last tour stop for the 1Pattern:3Ways tour and today Denita at Hattilu Handmade shows three versions of a Coraline Clutch from Swoon Patterns along with some useful tips on how to slowly step out of your box and make some modifications to the pattern.

Head over to her blog to read her full post, advice for modifications, and see more pictures.  While you are there, take time to look around her blog.  Denita is always making something stunning.  I am in love with the Coraline she made out of the special occasion fabric!

Also, this is the last weekend to enter the giveaway for one of three pattern packages.  Click to read further for the giveaway info!

February Link Party - Sew Your (Pattern) Stash

It's time to open our February monthly link up for Sew Your (Pattern) Stash 2015 (you can read more about Sew Your (Pattern) Stash here and join the Facebook group here if you haven't already).  I hope you get a chance to link up!  I've set up this link party to accept photos without a url to give opportunity to those of you who do not blog or have a url for your project.   The January link party was lots of fun with several creative projects.  I am disappointed that, although I sewed a ton during January, I never completed my goal of sewing something for myself.  This month, I am aiming to sew a Stella from Swoon Patterns (affiliate link) and a few other small accessories like burp cloths and lip balm holders.  Maybe (but I'm not counting on it) I'll get to make some pajama pants for the kids.  The weeks always seem to fly by and February is even shorter than most months.

Congratulations go to Denita from Hattilu Handmade as the random winner of last month's link party (winning link).  Please visit her blog to see all she accomplished.  I love what she made for herself and especially the touch of decorative stitching at the pockets and hemline on her Jocole Wideleg Pants.  She won a $15 gift certificate to the Imagine Gnats shop (affiliate link). The prize was self-sponsored - I love Rachel's blog and shop and wanted to introduce more people to it.  If you haven't seen her selection of fabrics and patterns - I highly recommend you stop by.  In addition to carrying great fabric, she runs some incredible sales and offers even more fun on her blog.

And A Prize! (Three Prizes!)
This month Alicia from Swoon Patterns is giving away three of her favorite patterns.  Three winners: the first can choose one from Glenda, Betty and Vivian.  The second winner gets her choice between the two reamianing patterns and the third received the remaining pattern.

Photography Tips & Tricks for Sewing and Testing

Honestly, there have probably only been two or three photo shoots that have gone as I had envisioned, hoped, or planned.  I've certainly learned a lot and still have lots of room to learn and improve, but I don't let it take the fun and enjoyment out of sewing anymore.  I used to.

The #honestcraftroomies scope hop on Periscope last night addressed photography tips and tricks for sewing and quilting, which we had planned several weeks in advance.  During the scope hop, each scope-er covered topics ranging from lighting, background, equipment, what and how to photograph, to why to photography even if you don't have a blog and aren't a professional.  For my part, I discussed what to photograph when testing a pattern for a designer, and also what to photograph when sharing a garment or handbag (or other project) to help others understand what features a pattern has. You can watch the replay of my broadcast below, and I've gone in to more detail in this post.  You can also always find links and details from my Periscope broadcasts by visiting the Periscope tab at the top of my site.  Also, I included links at the end of the post to watch the broadcast replays for the others in the scope hop - they really shared a lot of valuable tips and examples!

(It also happens that Art Gallery Fabrics recently shared a post with tips for presenting your handmade products on Instagram with excellent suggestions for great photography, and Pattern Revolution just started a series on photography tips for testers. It must be time for everyone in the online sewing world to talk photography!)

A Few of My Favorite {Sewing} Things

I have a wishlist coming up, but first I took time to sit down and think about some of my favorite sewing related items from the last year.  We did a Periscope tour showing them in person this week, and you can katch the replay below if you want to watch on video (not one of my best!).  But I forgot a few things, so be sure to read the whole list, too - and let me know in the comment what your favorite sewing things are.  I've also opened a link party if you'd like to link up to your own post about your favorite sewing things.  This is genuinely a list of some of my favorite sewing (and sewing blogging) items - affiliate links are marked with an*, and the amazon images (but not the text links for those items) are also affiliate.  I appreciate you using my affiliate links if you find them helpful.  I do not use affiliate links for items I do not endorse and benefit from.

1Pattern:3Ways Wrap Up and Winners

Our 1 Pattern:3Ways Tour has concluded so here are the highlights all in one easy post.  Click the link under each picture to head to the full post. Each of the bloggers did a great job using their pattern in both standard and creative ways. Hopefully, you've been inspired to look at the patterns you already own in new ways and think about how to use them for a variety of looks.  (Not that you shouldn't buy more patterns - that is always fun, too!)

Also, congratulations to Rebekah, Melissa, and Heidi for each winning one of the pattern packages.  And thank you to Tikatuly, Sis Boom/Scientific Seamstress, Candy Castle Patterns, Made with Moxie, Filles a Maman, Kid Approved, and Little Kiwi's Closet for the patterns to give away.  Be sure to visit their shops for your next patterns!

For the Love of Sewing - Lessons Learned in my First Year

*the following article was written by me and first appeared in Issue 6 of One Thimble Magazine (affiliate link)

Just over one year ago I began sewing more seriously and jumped in to the online sewing and blogging community.  It’s been a great year.  I never could have imagined the techniques I would learn in just one year or the projects I would be able to complete.  When I began, my sewing history consisted of the occasional valance, curtain, or Halloween costume.  About a year before I really took up sewing, I sewed a ruffled crib skirt for my first daughter and it was a huge deal to me that I even attempted it, let alone completed it.  Even though I sewed occasionally, I had the idea that I couldn’t sew, really.  In my mind, there were Those Who Can Sew, and then I was in the other group with people who could not.  Through the encouragement of a few friends and the generous loan of a newer sewing machine, I tentatively tested the waters in the pool of Those Who Can Sew and I never came back.

I am still learning and as I celebrated my one-year blog birthday [in January 2015], I took time to reflect on significant lessons from my first year of seriously sewing.
