Color Play Friday: Minneapolis {Summery Color Palette and Fabric Bundle with Art Gallery Denim Studio Fabrics}

This week's image reminds me of my hometown.  Maybe if you've been there, this palette will remind you of a warm summer evening listening to a concert in the Gazebo, a wedding party taking photos in the downtown gardens, or eating Toft's ice cream on a bench at Shoreline Park.  Even if you haven't visited my hometown, I hope this palette for Color Play Friday hosted by Trina (In An Otter Life) and Lorinda (Laurel, Poppy & Pine) will inspire you!  Keep reading to find out more about the colors and fabrics I chose this week.

The Image & Colors:
This week's image was taken by Trina of In An Otter Life during her first trip to Quilt Market which was in Minneapolis that spring (2010, I think).  This image reminds me of the limestone churches, cathedrals and other buildings very common (and beautiful!) in the town I grew up in along Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio.  The downtown area is dotted with several blocks of gardens, the bay, parks and lovely old buildings like this one.

The Fabrics:
The Painterly Wash printed denim from Art Gallery Fabric's The Denim Studio became the foundation for this palette.  I have about a fat quarter of this fabric and I love the colors and print.  I also added the frosted sage solid denim from the same line.  Natalie Lymer's Greatest Adventure fabric added a whimsical touch and went with the summery-outdoor-fun the was in my mind when I put this together.

*note: The AFG Denim Studio printed denim and solid denim are both suitable for quilting or garment sewing.  I own both the fabrics featured in this palette.  The cotton dobby, linen blend, and textured denim from the AGF Denim Studio are a heavier weight and not suitable for quilting, although they are excellent for garment and/or handbag sewing.  The cotton dobby is my favorite of them all - it is so soft with an easy drape.

  1. Thank you for posting a bundle that helps us think outside the 'quilting' box and consider other project options! These would make a gorgeous summer handbag.

  2. Oh the fabrics are darling. They are definitely the perfect mixture of "small town" without being overly "country".

  3. What a lovely group of colours! I never would have thought to put them together, but they work so well. I can't wait to get my hands on some of the AGF denims for some totes.

    1. Thank you, Reece! The AGF Denim is fantastic all around. I have all the solid smooth, solid textured denim, the dobby, and the linen blend. The smooth is nice and soft like regular AGF cotton, and the textured is heavy like a canvas. They both will make awesome handbags - you should definitely get some ;)

    1. Thank you! Yes, found the coral when I was pulling the sea green color from the same sign. Its fun to see what is hidden in the picture sometimes.

  5. This is such a wonderful project. I really loved it. Thanks a ton for sharing these photos. I often visit many venues with family and friends but never got any idea for my quilting projects from those trips. I am impressed that you got a brilliant inspiration from this gallery space.

    1. Thank you, Drew. I love the challenge of participating in Color Play Friday. If you are on Periscope at all, the #honestcraftroomies did a scope hop on sources of Inspiration one week and you can still find many of them on katch.me (or search twitter - or contact me using the tab above and I can send you some links). I was so impressed by all the sources individuals drew quilting inspiration from - many from places they lived or traveled.
